RDC Kings tame Lions in straight sets

The RDC Kings Volleyball team came off their bye week and picked up a three set sweep in Calgary against the Ambrose University Lions (25-23, 25-14 and 25-20).

The Kings spread out their offence in Saturday's match. Steven Keating, Thomas Wass and Ben Holmes had 6 kills each for the Kings. Ben Hankins and Adam Turlejski had 5 each. Evan Parchomchuk recorded 3. 

Kings Volleyball Head Coach Aaron Schulha appreciated the well rounded game from setter Thomas Wass. "Tom did a good job running our offence and he was solid from the service line, and at the net," said Schulha. "He was named our player-of-the-game and deservedly so."

Wass, a first-year student-athlete from Adelaide, Australia, recorded 22 assists, 6 kills, 6 digs and 1 stuff block. 

Schulha gave credit to 6'7" Ben Hankins in the Kings' first set win. "Ben was solid for us as well and was the main reason that we were able to squeak out the first set," said Schulha. "We were down 22-17 and were able to side out, and then we rattled off a six point run from Ben's serve." 

Hankins, a Bachelor of Education student from Red Deer, accumulated 5 kills, 1 assist, 1 service ace, 2 digs and 1 stuff block. 

Schulha expects the Lions to have some fight in the rematch at RDC. "We expect Ambrose University to play better on Sunday so we need to be a little more aggressive with our outside attack," said Schulha. "We should be able to put them in more service trouble in our gym so that should allow us to run some things."

The RDC Kings (12-9) will compete against the Ambrose University Lions (4-17) on Sunday, February 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the RDC Main Gym. The standings are tight in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men's Volleyball South Division. The SAIT Trojans (20-4) have already clinched a spot in the postseason with 40 points. The Medicine Hat College Rattlers (13-9) are the host of the championship and will receive a spot in the playoffs. Lethbridge College (14-8) and Briercrest College (14-8) share second spot with 28 points. The Kings have 24 points but have played 1 less match.
