Trojans edge Volleyball Kings in five sets

Friday in Calgary, the SAIT Trojans hosted the RDC Volleyball Kings, and after the Trojans jumped out to a two set lead the Kings battled back to send the match to a fifth set. SAIT eventually picked up the home win in the final set. 

The Trojans won the first two sets 25-22 and 25-23. RDC dug in and took the next two sets 28-26 and 25-23. In the fifth set, SAIT picked up a 15-12 win to take the match.

Adam Turlejski finished with 11 kills and 3 stuff blocks, and setter Thomas Wass contributed 37 assists, 1 service ace, 4 digs and 4 kills for the Kings. Scott Irvine totaled 8 kills, 3 assists and 5 digs. As a team, the Kings accumulated 4 service aces and 10 stuff blocks. 

Trent Mounter led the Trojans with 26 kills and Spencer Coulter chipped in with 20.

Aaron Schulha, head coach of the RDC Kings, liked his team's passing and blocking in Calgary. "It was our best blocking match of the season and we passed quite well against a tough serving team. However, they totally outplayed us on the outsides," said Schulha. "Adam Turlejski had a solid match out of the middle for us, but he was also our leading kill getter with 11. SAIT had two guys with 20 or more kills."

Schulha would like to see more kills from the outside on Saturday. "In the rematch, we want to improve our outside attack efficiency, service pressure and our back court defence," said Schulha. 

The RDC Kings (7-4) will host the SAIT Trojans (9-2) on Saturday, November 25 at 8:00 p.m. in the RDC Main Gym. The SAIT Trojans and Medicine Hat College Rattlers share top spot in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men's Volleyball South Division with 18 points. The RDC Kings and Lethbridge College Kodiaks are next with 14 points.
