Another sweep of the Clippers, Kings' defence looks solid

While the Red Deer College Kings Volleyball team swept the Briercrest College Clippers on Friday evening, they wanted to improve in a few areas. On Saturday in a rematch, several aspects of their play improved. The Kings displayed fewer unforced errors and a strong defence.  The result was the same and the RDC Kings swept the Clippers in straight sets. 

The Kings won the first set 25-15, captured the second set 25-18 and outscored the Clippers 25-21 to claim the match victory.

Kings Volleyball Head Coach Aaron Schulha appreciated the team's composure. "The end of the third set will stick with me a little bit when we allowed them to get on a significant run. Briercrest is a good team and well coached," said Schulha. "They have some players who really go after their serves and we can't expect them to go away without a fight. I was pleased with our effort and when they rattled off a few runs we didn't get too flustered."

The depth of the Kings' lineup was apparent this past weekend. "We were able to use both of our setters and liberos in starting roles. It shows our depth. There is a lot of internal competition for those starting spots and that will only help us moving forward. There were a lot of good things on the weekend. To beat a good team 3-0 and 3-0, I can't complain too much, but I will pick some things apart and we will improve in some areas in the next couple of weeks," said Schulha. "Our defence was a big difference maker in that match. We were digging a whole lot of balls which frustrated them. We had a lot of good fight this weekend. I think we had more aces today and less errors as well. We were doing a better job of hitting our targets from the service line. Our serving could be a weapon for us and it will be a work in progress." 

After making a significant play, many Kings were supportive and excited for each other. "This is a really tight group and they are really happy for one another," said Schulha. "All of the guys want to be on the floor but they are hoping for the best for one another. When we have that positivity early in the season, it's a really good thing."

Scott Irvine was chosen as the Kings player-of-the-game. The Bachelor of Business Administration (General Management) student from Red Deer earned 8 kills, 1 assist, 1 service ace and 1 stuff block. As a group, the Kings totaled 27 kills, 26 assists, 11 service aces, 7 digs and 6 stuff blocks.

The RDC Kings (2-0) will host the Olds College Broncos (0-1) on Friday, October 20 at 8:00 p.m.
