The Red Deer College Kings Volleyball team started the new season by celebrating their 13th Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Volleyball National Championship in front of an appreciative crowd on their home court. The Kings hosted the Briercrest College Clippers to begin the 2017 – 18 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men's Volleyball season and the Kings carried on from last year's winning ways as they defeated the Clippers in 3 straight sets.

The Kings won the opening set 25-23, the second set 25-22 and capped off a match victory with a 25-20 victory in the third set.

Kings Volleyball Head Coach Aaron Schulha saw some inconsistent play on Friday, but recognized an adjustment period for the new student-athletes. "There were some ups and downs tonight. There were some points in every set where we gave some momentum to them," said Schulha. "There were some good things happening tonight for sure. Briercrest is well coached and they have the quickest offence to the outsides. Our guys did a nice job picking up their speed and there was some adjustment for the new student-athletes in their first regular season match. Conference games are a different animal than exhibition games."

On Saturday, the Kings want to improve in a few areas."We want to make more serves on Saturday, let the Clippers off the hook less and make fewer unforced errors," said Schulha.

Adam Turlejski was named the Kings player-of-the-game. The Bachelor of Business Administration student accumulated 9 kills, 1 assist, 1 dig, 1 service ace and 1 stuff block. Over 3 sets, the Kings totalled 34 kills, 25 assists, 3 service aces and 12 digs.

The RDC Kings (1-0) will play the Briercrest College Clippers (0-1) on Saturday, October 14 at 3:00 p.m. in the RDC Main Gym.
