Clippers over Kings in five sets

Clippers over Kings in five sets

Friday featured a battle of the top two teams in the ACAC Men's Volleyball South Division as the Red Deer College Kings travelled to Caronport, Saskatchewan to face the Briercrest Clippers. In a close match the Clippers defeated the Kings in five sets.

The Kings started off strongly winning the opening set 25-23. Briercrest College evened the match up by taking the second set 25-21. RDC bounced back and won the third set 25-17 to go up 2 sets to 1. The Clippers took the fourth set 25-10 to send the match to a fifth and deciding set. In the final set the Clippers won 15-13 to pick up the 3 sets to 2 victory.

Kings Head Coach Aaron Schulha thought that strong serving from the Clippers was one difference in the match.

"Briercrest College had two players that got hot from the service line with spin serves," said Schulha. "With the low roof in the gym we just couldn't weather the storm."

Schulha hopes to see more consistency on Saturday.

"There were a lot of runs of errors on our side which sucked the life out of the team at times," said Schulha. "This allowed Briercrest to build some momentum."

Regan Fathers was named the Kings player-of-the-game. The Kinesiology and Sport Studies student finished with 13 kills, 1 service ace and 15 digs. As a team, the RDC Kings had a five set total of 40 kills, 4 service aces, 38 assists and 49 digs.

Currently the RDC Kings and Briercrest Clippers share top spot in the ACAC Men's Volleyball South Division with a 5-2 record. The same two teams meet at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 at Briercrest College and the winner will jump into first place in the South Division.
