Kings Soccer season is complete

Sunday the Red Deer College Kings Soccer team entered their final regular season game against the Olds College Broncos at the RDC Field. In a close game the Broncos won 3-2.

Olds scored in the 1st minute on a goal by Aaron Primeau. RDC responded in the 22nd minute when Delbert Albert tied the game. The Kings kept pushing forward and took the lead 2-1 when Mark Ibbotson found the back of the net in the 41st minute. Delbert Albert, from North Battleford, Saskatchewan, picked up the assist.

In the second half Eric Porter tied the game for Olds in the 49th minute. The Kings created several good chances in the second half to take the lead, but on a broken play the Broncos scored late to take a 3-2 lead. The game had good pace to it.

Kings Head Coach Wade Groenewegen was disappointed with today's result.

"We really peaked last weekend and rolling guys out of the roster for the week really changed the dynamic and that carried forward to today. We didn't really execute this weekend," said Groenewegen. "We were up 2-1, in a winning position but not quite being in the right mindset at the beginning of each half. We paid the price for that. Aside from the first five minutes of each half, we were in a comfortable position. But that's not the way it went. We need to play a full ninety minutes."

Bachelor of Education student, Mark Ibbotson, worked extremely hard right until the final whistle and was chosen as the Kings player-of-the-game.

"That was Mark's last game. If I would like anything better, I would have liked for him to get the result that he earned today," said Groenewegen. "He sure put in a winning effort."

The Kings season is complete and with a young team many players are eligible to return in 2017.
