Soccer Kings drop road game against Lakeland

The Red Deer College Kings Soccer team knew today would be a challenge against the Lakeland College Rustlers. The Rustlers entered Saturday's game at 4-0-1, having scored the most goals (15) and allowing the least (3) in the South Division. The RDC Kings came in with a record of 2-3-0.

In wet conditions Lakeland College struck early and often on their home field, scoring four goals in the first seventeen minutes. The Rustlers added one more goal at the 35th minute and entered the half up 5-0. Lakeland College added a 6th goal at the 47th minute and the game ended 6-0.

Head Coach Wade Groenewegen noted that the speed of the Rustlers created problems for the RDC defenders.

"Lakeland has a few very quick guys on their team," said Groenewegen. "We didn't deal with the pace well."

Despite the loss Groenewegen saw strong performances from several players.

"Masoum (Zaher) continues to show that he is one of the best defenders in the league," said Groenewegen. "Without his strong play the Rustlers could have increased their lead."

Two rookies impressed the Kings Head Coach this afternoon.

"I liked the play of Timmo (van Klaveren) and Tanner (Steenbergen)," said Groenewegen. "They gave warrior-like efforts and both played a full ninety minutes."

Timmo van Klaveren is a Kinesiology and Sport Studies student while Tanner Steenbergen studies Electrical Engineering Technology.

The Kings head south on Saturday, Oct. 15 to face Lethbridge College at 4:00 p.m. Lethbridge has two wins and four losses on the season.
