Soccer Kings shut-out Olds 2-0

Soccer Kings shut-out Olds 2-0

In Olds, the Kings Soccer team took to the pitch following the Queens Sunday afternoon. They started out well, creating many quality scoring opportunities including hitting the post behind the Olds College Broncos goalkeeper. But time wound down in the 1st half with neither team managing to find the back of the net.

Red Deer College continued to press in the 2nd half, searching for that important 1st goal.

Persistence finally paid off. At the 82nd minute, Mark Ibbotson, from Three Hills, headed a ball into the corner to give the Kings a 1-0 lead. Frank van Oostrom picked up the assist. The RDC soccer squad continued to keep the foot on the gas. Ibbotson was eventually named the Kings player-of-the-game.

Two minutes later the RDC Kings extended their lead when Bruno Damian fired a laser into the top corner. It gave the Kings some breathing room as the clock ticked down.

The Kings Head Coach Wade Groenewegen was happy with many of his players and the final result.

"We earned what we worked for today," said Groenewegen. "Mark Ibbotson scored a timely goal when we really needed it."

While if was nice to score a pair of goals, Groenewegen recognized the strong defensive play this afternoon.

"Masoum Zaher was good for us today on defense," said Groenewegen. "In fact our entire back line was very good."

Raymond Fox from North Battleford, Saskatchewan earned the shut-out.

The Kings have a record of 2-3-1 and head to Lakeland College on Saturday, Oct. 1 to face the Rustlers at 4:00 p.m.
