Kings extend win streak to five games, Trieber scores first ACAC goal in Queens victory

Lac la Biche and Red Deer, January 26, 2024 – Both the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens skated away with victories on Friday night. The Queens shut out the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 7-0 while the Kings defeated the Portage College Voyageurs 6-1.

Queens Hockey – Queens 7 vs Medicine Hat College Rattlers 0

The Queens opened the game with three goals on 24 shots in the first 20 minutes of play with forward Annalisa Trieber (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) scoring her first Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) goal in her eighth game played which ended up being the game-winner. At the end of the first period, the Polytechnic held the Rattlers to just one shot on goal.

Queens forward Avery Lajeunesse (Bachelor of Education) extended her team's lead to four with the game's only goal in the second period. The Rattlers added five more shots in the middle frame but the Queens continued to outscore Medicine Hat College 42-6.

The Queens would skate away with it in the third period as they added three more goals to shutout the Rattlers 7-0 in the first of two games against each other this weekend. Defence Jessica Bouffard (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) added her second assist of the game in the final 20 minutes on the Polytechnic's sixth goal which was scored by forward Jailyn Bablitz (Bachelor of Education). On top of Bouffard, forward Julie Wagner (Bachelor of Arts in Communication), Lajeunesse and Trieber each had two points in the victory. 

Head Coach Kelly Coulter explained as his team tonight's game he really wanted them to focus on being sharper when it comes to executing their game plan.


"The biggest thing we talked about before the game was getting back to having better habits on the ice. We wanted them to execute more cleanly and crisply. I thought we were able to do that tonight and it was nice to see how well the new line changes worked.

The player of the game from the Rattlers was awarded to goaltender Jessika Charron (General Studies) for her 56-save performance in the team's loss. Queens goaltender Izzy Palumbo (Bachelor of Commerce) stopped all seven shots she faced.

These two teams will be back at it tomorrow at 1 pm for the final game of the doubleheader.

 

Kings Hockey – Kings 6 at Portage College Voyageurs 1

The Kings would open the scoring 45 seconds in the game with forward Nolan Doell (Bachelor of Education) finding the back of the Voyageurs. RDP would add two more in the period with defenceman Ty Ettinger's (Bachelor of Education) goal at the 11-minute mark being the game-winning in the 6-1 victory over the Portage College Voyageurs.

The third goal of the period was scored shorthanded by forward Ryland McNinch (Bachelor of Education) who was later named the player of the game for his two goal and one assist performance in the win. He would add a powerplay goal with five minutes left in the second period.

Forwards Jacob Wozney (Bachelor of Education), Holden Knights (Business Certificate) and Erik Miller (Bachelor of Business Administration) all had two points in the victory. Goaltender Kristian Lyon (Business Administration) started in just his second game of the season and allowed just one goal on 29 shots while the Kings finished with 41.

These two teams will have a quick turnaround tomorrow as they will face off in a rematch at 1 pm.
