Kings nearly complete rally against Trojans, earn one point

Calgary, AB - After the Trojans took a 4-1 lead, the Kings scored three unanswered goals to send the game to overtime. SAIT eventually scored on the power play in the extra frame and squeaked out a 5-4 overtime decision. The Red Deer College Kings earned one point in the standings, taking three of a possible four points over the SAIT Trojans in the weekend series.
The Trojans connected twice in the first period and early in the second, to go up 3-0. Then Ryley Smith got the Kings on the board at 12:08. The right winger from Huxley, Alberta beat Payton Lee on the power play. Tyler Podgorenko and Tyrell Mappin had the assists.
Nineteen seconds into the third, SAIT restored their three goal lead. Then the Kings got rolling. Both Ross Heidt and Tanner Butler scored on the power play within a 32 second span, and Austin Hunter tied the game 4-4 at 8:42. The Kings peppered Lee with 20 shots in the period.
After three periods and a five minute four-on-four overtime period couldn't produce a winner, SAIT eventually scored at 2:23 in double-overtime on the man advantage for the 5-4 home win.
Trombley made 36 saves and Payton Lee turned aside 41 shots.

"I was proud of how the guys came back after being down 4-1," says Trevor Keeper, Kings Head Coach. "Both our power play and penalty killing were good, and they gave us a chance to win in a physical game."
There were several solid performances in Calgary. "Ross Heidt missed a couple of games, but returned with a couple of points and was named the Kings Player-of-the Game," says Keeper. "Scott Ferguson was effective and really used his speed."
Once again, special teams played an integral role. The Kings went 3-for-9 on the power play and killed off 6 out of 7 of SAIT's opportunities.
The Kings have sole possession of second place in the standings with 18 points. MacEwan University is only one point ahead.
Next weekend, the Kings (8-2-1-1) will host the Briercrest College Clippers (2-10-0-0) at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. On Friday, November 23, the Kings will challenge the Clippers at 7:00 p.m. and then on Saturday, the two teams will meet at 1:00 p.m.
