In Penhold, Griffins over Kings

Friday, the MacEwan University Griffins paid a visit to the Penhold Multiplex to face the Red Deer College Kings. The Kings have competed hard against some top teams lately. Mike Salmon got the start in the Kings net while Marc-Olivier Daigle guarded the cage for the Griffins. 

Shawn Proulx opened the scoring for the Griffins at 3:48 of the 1st period. Less than 6 minutes later the Kings responded. Mike Statchuk tied the game 1-1 at 9:28. Riley Simpson picked up the lone assist. About a minute later, Jacob Schofield put MacEwan University up 2-1. 

After 20 minutes, the Kings had 7 shots on goal while the Griffins tested Salmon 7 times.

At 3:30 of the 2nd period, Cameron Gotaas scored to give the Griffins a 3-1 lead. On the power play, Ryan Benn put MacEwan University up 4-1 at 13:46. The Kings reduced the lead by 2 (4-2) when Riley Simpson scored shorthanded at 14:22. Ben Williams picked up the assist.

The Kings fired 13 shots at Daigle in the 2nd period while the Griffins had 12 shots on Salmon.

At 9:09 of the 3rd period, Clayton Petrie scored on the power play to give MacEwan University a 5-2 lead. Scott Ferguson scored for the Kings at 12:17 to bring RDC within 2 (5-3). Jordan McTaggart and Landon Kletke picked up the assists. The Kings pulled Salmon in favour of an extra attacker but Nolan Yaremchuk found the empty net with 42 seconds remaining to give the Griffins a 6-3 victory. 

In the 3rd period, the Kings directed 8 shots at the Griffins net while MacEwan University responded with 8 shots. RDC outshot MacEwan University 28-27 over 3 periods.

The Kings went 0-for-6 on the power play while the Griffins connected on 2-of-3 opportunities with the extra skater.

In a rematch, the Griffins host the Kings Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
