Kings win convincingly over Voyageurs

In a weekend rematch the Red Deer College Kings Hockey team faced the Portage College Voyageurs, but this time the venue shifted to the Penhold Multiplex. Troy Trombley once again was in net for the Kings and was coming off a shut-out performance in Lac La Biche Friday evening. Olivier Charest started for the Voyageurs and was later replaced by Nathan Warren.

The RDC Kings scored early and often from a variety of players, completing an 8-1 home win. 

Nick Fountain opened the scoring for the Kings 2:30 into the first period. With 5:50 remaining in the period Zak Hicks put the RDC Kings up 2-0. Austin Hunter extended the Kings lead 3-0 with 2:19 left.

After 20 minutes the Kings had 14 shots while the Voyageurs directed 9 on Trombley. 

On the power play, 3:05 into the second period Tyler Berkholtz put the Kings up 4-0. Scott Ferguson made it 5-0 for the Kings 7:46 into the middle frame. On the power play Brandon Syms put Portage College on the board but with 30 seconds left Dustin Gorgi scored on the power play to give the Kings a 6-1 lead. Tyler Berkholtz put the Kings up 7-1 on the power play with only 5 seconds remaining. 

Both goaltenders were busy in the second period as the Kings fired 20 more shots at Charest. Trombley dealt with 15 shots from the Voyageurs.

Nathan Warren replaced Charest in the Voyageurs net for the third period. Arie Postmus scored 11:28 into the final period to give the Kings an 8-1 lead. Time wound down with no further scoring and the game ended 8-1 for the RDC Kings.

RDC had 13 third period shots for a game total of 47. Portage College had 8 more shots in the final period for a game total of 32.  

Tanner Butler was named the Kings player-of-the-game. The student-athlete from Souris, Manitoba finished with 3 assists. 

Portage College went 1-for-6 on the power play while the RDC Kings were successful on 2-of-8 man advantages. Along with many other RDC Kings, goaltender Troy Trombley had a solid weekend. In the two game set against Portage College, Trombley incredibly turned aside 64-of-65 shots he faced.

The RDC Kings were unbeaten on the weekend, picking up 4 of a possible 4 points. The Kings next play Friday, Nov. 11 in Camrose against the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings at 7:30 p.m.
