Hockey Kings shaded in double overtime

In a weekend rematch the Red Deer College Kings Hockey team faced the MacEwan University Griffins at the Penhold Multiplex Saturday evening. The game was close throughout but the Griffins eventually won 3-2 in double overtime.

Red Deer native, Mike Salmon started once again in net for the Kings while Marc-Olivier Daigle was in goal for MacEwan. Salmon was coming off an impressive performance Friday against the Griffins, helping his Kings pick up the road win. The opening period featured perfect goaltending from both teams. The Kings had 7 shots on goal while the Griffins directed 6 at Salmon.

Ben Williams, from Souris, Manitoba, put the Kings up 1-0 on a goal 3:44 into the middle period. Riley Simpson picked up the assist. The Griffins tied the game up 1-1 with 4:27 left in the second period on a goal by Michael Roberts. With his second goal of the period Ben Williams put the Kings up 2-1 with only 1:11 remaining. Blair Mulder and Tyler Berkholtz assisted on the go-ahead goal. Shots were even at 8 after 40 minutes.

Time was winding down in the third period when the Griffins tied the game 2-2 with 36 seconds left in the game, sending it to overtime. MacEwan University fired 12 shots at Salmon while the Kings had 5 shots on Daigle. 

The first 5 minute overtime period solved nothing. Salmon was perfect on 4 Griffins shots while Daigle stopped 3 shots by the Kings.

MacEwan University scored 4:04 into the second overtime period to pick up the win. RDC added 6 more shots for a game total of 29. The Griffins finished with 32 shots, including 2 more in double overtime. 

The Kings were 0-for-3 on the power play while the Griffins went 0-for-5 with the man advantage. Despite the double overtime loss, the Kings picked up 3 of a possible 4 points on the weekend.

The Kings next play Friday, Nov. 4 at Portage College at 7:00 p.m.
