Kings scored a season-high in points while the Queens tame the Broncos in Olds

Olds, November 24, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens explode on offence at Olds College as the Queens were four points away from a 100 in their victory over the Broncos while the Kings scored a season-high 123 points in their win over Olds.

Queens Basketball – Queens 96 at Olds College Broncos 36

The Queens had a great first half as they held the Broncos to just 18 points while scoring 50. Forward Janai Hubert (Bachelor of Kinesiology) had a game-high 13 points and 10 rebounds at half to complete a double-double. RDP struggled from the free-throw line, shooting 50 per cent from the line, while shooting 43 per cent from the field at the half.

The Queens continued their offensive and defensive dominance in the second half as they held Olds to just 11 points in the third while scoring 23 to extend their lead to 73-29.

RDP would outscore the Broncos 23-7 in the final 10 minutes of the game to walk away with a 96-36 victory. Guard Lauren France (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) had an impressive second half and came off the bench to drop a game-high 19 points as she went five-for-10 from three-point range.

Hubert was quiet in the second half but was named the player of the game after finishing the game with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Her teammate Sandra Garcia-Bernal (Educational Assistant) had a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists.

The Queens and Broncos will head to Red Deer tomorrow evening for a 6 pm tip-off.

Kings Basketball – Kings 123 at Olds College Broncos 75

RDP started strong in the first half outscoring Olds College 59-32. Guard Efe Iyamu (Open Studies) had a game-high 17 points at the half. He finished with a total of 19.

In the final 20 minutes of the game, the Kings scored 64 points with 35 of those coming in the fourth quarter. But the Polytechnic's defence slipped in the fourth as they allowed their most points of the game with the Broncos dropping 24 points in the 123-75 loss.

The Kings took advantage of some sloppy plays by the Broncos with RDP scoring 34 points off 29 turnovers. The visitors shot just under 50 per cent from the field while shooting 38 per cent from three-point range.

At the end of the game, guard Deandre Rowe (Open Studies) and Jose Mauro (Business Diploma) tied for the game-high in points with 20 while Mauro had an outstanding in the paint picking 16 rebounds. He was named the player of the game for his outstanding performance on both sides of the court with 13 of his total rebounds being in the defensive zone.

Guard Tyrique Walter had another impressive game off the bench and was one of six student-athletes who finished with double digits in points with 19.

These two teams will clash tomorrow evening in the rubber match of the home-and-home series this weekend.
