Powell dominates, Kings strike Lightning in Calgary

Friday evening in Calgary, the Red Deer College Basketball Kings had an all-star performance from 6'8" forward Daniel Powell and they defeated the St. Mary's University Lightning 92-66.
After the first half, the RDC Kings led 40-35. Daniel Powell, a fourth-year student-athlete, contributed 21 points, 10 rebounds and 1 steal. Jordan Britton had 5 points for the Lightning.
The Red Deer College Kings elevated their game in the second half. They outscored St. Mary's University 52-31 over the final two quarters and earned a 92-66 victory. Daniel Powell added 21 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal in the latter half. Averie Armbrister totaled 11 points, 1 steal and 2 rebounds for the Lightning in the final two quarters.
The Kings were effective in several areas. They recorded 56 boards and shot 43.4% from the field. The Lightning had 34 rebounds and connected on 33.3% of their field goals. Averie Armbrister led the Lightning with 16 points.
Dshawn Tyrell chipped in with 15 points for RDC. Eric Bakker had 11 points and 9 rebounds.
Kings Basketball Head Coach Clayton Pottinger liked his team's performance as the game progressed and noted one key contributor. "We had a slow start to the game but we began the third quarter really well," said Pottinger. "Daniel Powell had a very good game and finished with 42 points and 19 rebounds. He was really feeling it today."
The Kings will look to complete the regular season on a positive note. "Saturday, we want to finish the season strong in front of our supportive fans at RDC," said Pottinger. "We've won three in a row and want to make it four to gain some momentum heading into the playoffs."
The third place Kings (13-7) will host the Lightning (4-16), Saturday, February 24, at 8:00 p.m. in the last regular season game at RDC. The Red Deer College Kings will compete in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men's Basketball Championship, March 1 to 3, at Lethbridge College.
