SAIT over RDC 91-87

A short bench and fatigue were factors in last night's game, but the Red Deer College Kings showed energy early to begin this afternoon's rematch against the SAIT Trojans. The Kings had a good 1st half but then fatigue and some inconsistent play entered into the 2nd half. The Trojans won 91-87.

After the 1st quarter, the Kings led the Trojans 25-19. Shayne Stumpf contributed 13 points, 1 steal and 1 rebound for RDC. Sherif Taha had 6 points for SAIT. As a team, the Kings went 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

The Kings continued to press in the 2nd quarter and expanded their lead. At half time, the Kings led by 17 points (55-38). First year guard, Cody White connected on 2 shots from behind the 3-point-arch and finished with 8 points in the quarter. Shayne Stumpf had a half time total of 22 points, 1 steal and 2 rebounds for the Kings. As a team, the RDC Kings remained perfect from the free throw line. In the 2nd quarter, the Kings drained 83.3% of their 3-point-shots. Dathon Spencer totalled 12 points for the Trojans.

In the 3rd quarter the Trojans started to climb back into the game and at the end of the quarter the Kings' lead was reduced to 2 points (66-64). For RDC, Kai Greene had a 3 quarter total of 15 points, 1 steal, 5 assists and 2 rebounds. Dathon Spencer led SAIT with a total of 20 points.

As the game progressed, the Kings started to show the effects of a reduced lineup this afternoon and some inconsistencies crept into their play. The SAIT Trojans eventually defeated the RDC Kings 91-87. Shayne Stumpf led RDC with 27 points. Dathon Spencer was SAIT's top scorer with 24 points.

Kings Head Coach Clayton Pottinger thought that a consistent effort wasn't there this afternoon.

"Being undermanned hurt us, but I think the big thing that hurt us was that we didn't find that extra energy and determination that we usually can find," said Pottinger. "Today it wasn't there. It was one of the few games where we were outrebounded. SAIT scored 20 points off of our turnovers."

With several student-athletes out of the lineup due to injuries, a few 1st year Kings got valuable playing time.

"Cody (White) played phenomenal in the minutes that he got and probably earned himself more time if he continues to play like that," said Pottinger. "Darryl (Broderick) played well and hit his 1st shot in his 1st ACAC game, a 3-pointer from the corner."

Kai Greene was named the Kings player-of-the-game. The 3rd year Visual Arts student finished with 20 points, 1 steal, 6 assists and 2 rebounds. 

Next weekend, the RDC Kings (8-3) compete against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on the road in a pair of games. Friday, the teams face each other at 8:00 p.m. In a Saturday afternoon match-up, the Rattlers host the Kings at 3:00 p.m.
