Kings tame Lions 98-79

In Calgary, the 6-1 Red Deer College Kings Basketball team played the 1-4 Ambrose University Lions. The Kings entered Friday's game in top spot in ACAC Men's Basketball South Division while the Lions were in seventh place.

Offensively the Kings are rolling, scoring an average of 96.3 points per game and allowing 80.9 against in 7 games played. Defensively, the Kings have reduced the amount of points against and in 2 of the past 3 games have allowed under 72 points against (71 and 59). The Lions average 76.4 points for and 78 against in 5 games.

While the first quarter was tied, the Kings started to pull away and earned a 98-79 victory.

Each side scored 24 points in the opening quarter. In the second quarter the RDC Kings began to pull away scoring 27 points compared to 14 by the Lions for a 51-38 lead at half time. Scoring 28 third quarter points the Kings bumped their lead to 79-60. Each team scored 19 points in the fourth quarter and the RDC Kings sealed a 98-79 victory.

Matt Matear led the Kings with 21 points. The Business Administration student from Calgary also added 1 block, 11 rebounds and went 8-for-10 from the field. With the win, the RDC Kings move to 7-1 on the season and remain in first place in the ACAC Men's Basketball South Division. Ian Tevis contributed 20 points and Shayne Stumpf accumulated 19 points.

Kings Head Coach Clayton Pottinger was happy with the rebounding from his team.

"The Lions play hard especially in their own gym. Defensively we were good in spurts tonight," said Pottinger. "I was pleased with our rebounding. We were dominating on the boards at both ends tonight. We did a nice job taking away their second chances."

Saturday, the RDC Kings face the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in Lethbridge at 8:00 p.m.
