Kings over Lightning, remain perfect

The Red Deer College Kings Basketball team faced the St. Mary's University Lightning in Calgary Saturday. This was the third meeting between these two teams in the ACAC Men's Basketball regular season schedule, with the Kings winning the two previous meetings. RDC opened strongly and defeated the Lightning 94-59 with effective defence, which was one area they wanted to concentrate on.

The Kings came out fast in the opening quarter and jumped out to a 28-12 lead. Kai Greene led the RDC Kings with 8 points in the first quarter, while also adding 2 assists and 2 rebounds.

In the second quarter, the Lightning tried to pull themselves back into the game scoring 17 points but RDC responded with 19 of their own. At the half, the Kings led 47-29. Leading the Kings in the quarter was Shayne Stumpf with 9 points. He also added 3 rebounds.

Outscoring the Lightning 25-16 in the third quarter, the Kings took a 72-45 lead. Ramo Adun led the RDC Kings with 7 points, while also adding 1 rebound.

Kings Head Coach Clayton Pottinger gave a lot of credit to the Management Certificate student.

"Shayne had a great weekend of basketball," said Pottinger. "In fact, this could have been the best weekend of basketball that I have seen him play."

Pottinger was pleased with the team defence and contributions from a variety of scorers.

"Our defence has been a focus for us," said Pottinger. "I thought we did a good job tonight and held them to fifty-nine points. I liked our balanced scoring in this game and had many different players chip in."

Along with 25 points from Stumpf, Kai Greene had 10 points, Ian Tevis added 15, Matt Matear had 11 points along with 10 rebounds, Ramo Adun chipped in with 12 and Khurram Sultan totalled 10 points.
