Basketball Kings pick up road win over SAIT

In Calgary, the Red Deer College Kings Basketball team competed against the SAIT Trojans in their first regular season road game. After taking a 25-20 first quarter lead, the Kings continued to work hard and were up 50-38 at the half. Scoring 29 third quarter points the Kings extended their lead 79-60. The Trojans made a push in the fourth quarter scoring 36 points but the RDC Kings remained in control and completed the 104-96 victory.

The Kings Head Coach Clayton Pottinger liked the calm demeanour shown by the student-athletes when SAIT tried to rally.

"We did a great job throughout the game extending our lead," said Pottinger. "When the Trojans pushed to get back into the game, I was happy with how we played with poise."

Pottinger was pleased with the adaptability of the Kings when SAIT changed their defence.

"When the Trojans switched to a zone defence it could have been a game changer," said Pottinger. "We executed and the players handled the change very well.

The strong play of several Kings was complimented by Pottinger.

"Ian Tevis had another strong game with 27 points," said Pottinger. "He shot well tonight, especially from three. Matt Matear and Shayne Stumpf also played well. They each had 18 points and Shayne added 12 rebounds."

Tevis, a Kinesiology and Sport Studies student from Kent, Washington, finished with 27 points, 4 steals, 5 assists and 4 rebounds while shooting 5-for-8 from behind the three point arch. As a team, the Kings shot 56.3% from the field, 79.2% from the free throw line and were successful on 50% of their three point attempts.

The RDC Kings remain perfect on the season with a 4-0 record and hold the top spot in the ACAC Men's Basketball South Division. Saturday, Nov. 12 the Kings face the St. Mary's University Lightning in Calgary at 8:00 p.m. In two previous meetings the RDC Kings defeated the Lightning 118-87 and 94-76.
