Queens are victorious in Medicine Hat, Kings come away with a tie against the Rattlers

Medicine Hat, September 10, 2023 – It was a much better day for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Soccer program as they were able to pick up four points out of a total of six with the Queens picking up their first victory of the season with a 2-1 final and the Kings coming away with a 1-1 tie against the Medicine Hat Rattlers.

See below for more details regarding each of their matches.

Women's Soccer – Queens 2 at Medicine Hat College Rattlers 1

After a tough defeat against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, the Queens bounced back with a victory over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers, who defeated the Olds College Broncos yesterday afternoon.

Forward Isabel Anthony is having herself an incredible start to her Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) career as she has two goals in as many games as she capitalized against the Rattlers to give her Queens a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute which ended up being the score at the half. Anthony is a first-year student-athlete enrolled in Open Studies and hails from Sherwood Park. She was later named the player of the game.

The Polytechnic managed to put up five shots on goal in the first 45 which was something they really struggled to do yesterday against the Kodiaks.

In the 53rd minute, the Rattlers were able to solve Abby Kotyk (Bachelor of Kinesiology) with a goal from Maisa Rebello.

But forward Anessa Harrod (Open Studies), another rookie on the team, came off the bench in the second half and scored to take the lead with seven minutes left to go which ended up being the game-winning goal as the Queens defeated the Rattlers with a 2-1 final score. This put them at a 1-1 record at the end of their debut weekend of the 2023/2024 ACAC season.

The Polytechnic will have their home opener next week on Saturday as they take on the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings at 12 pm. The Vikings currently are 1-1 after they defeated the Ambrose University Lions 3-0 but were shut out by the SAIT Trojans 9-0 earlier today. The Queens will take on the Trojans next week Sunday in Calgary.

Men's Soccer – Kings 2 at Medicine Hat College Rattlers 2

It was a tough weekend for the Kings Soccer program as they settled for just one point this weekend.

The team was able to dominate the game and create multiple scoring opportunities but was not able to capitalize on the chances given to them.

However, the Kings would strike first after a great corner kick from forward Ajdin Sarcevic (Business Administration General) found defender Adan Sanchez-Pimentel (Bachelor of Education), who put the ball into the back of the net.

The Rattlers were able to tie the game up on a penalty kick that was taken by De'Shaunt Gelinas-Cato. This would conclude the first-half scoring with the Kings being outshot 4-1.

In the second half, the Polytechnic was able to continue to control the game but after some costly individual mistakes, the Rattlers Joel Lehr was able to beat keeper Garrett Thompson (Bachelor of Kinesiology) to go up 2-1.

But not long after, two minutes to be exact, Sarcevic put a free kick into the back of the net to tie the game up after the Kings continued to pressure the Rattlers. The game ended with a 2-2 draw.

The player of the game from the Polytechnic went to first-year Njegos Bajovic (Open Studies) who had a great game and controlled the team's defensive line.

The Kings will have a bye on Saturday but will be put to the test on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm in Calgary as they take on the SAIT Trojans who defeated the Ambrose University Lions 2-0 on Saturday in their lone game of the season.
