RDC Athlete of the Week for March 18, 2019

This past weekend, Shayla was a key contributor for the RDC Queens, helping her squad win silver at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Indoor Track Championships at Repsol Sport Centre in Calgary. Over the two days of competition, the Bachelor of Education student earned three gold medals along with the silver.

Shayla won gold in the 300 m (42.33), over two and a half seconds faster than silver medalist Shaunice Burgers from MacEwan University (44.87). The first-year runner also captured gold over 600 m (1:38.81), crossing the finish line over six seconds quicker than the second place runner (1:44.97).

Shayla, who’s from Stony Plain, was also a member of the gold medal winning 4 x 400 m relay team (4:20.21). Lauren Pasiuk, Jill Stewart and Sandra Garcia-Bernal joined Sklaruk on the first place relay squad.

RDC Athlete of the Week for Jan. 28, 2019

Shayla had an excellent day at Running Room Grand Prix #1, hosted by MacEwan University. The Bachelor of Education Elementary student was a key member of the RDC Queens Indoor Track team’s second place overall finish on January 26. The runner from Stony Plain had an impressive first place finish in the 300 m race (43.51), over two and a half seconds faster than Shaunice Burgers of MacEwan University. The first-year also placed second in the 60 m dash exhibition open (8.42), only two-tenths of a second out of top spot. Shayla and her team will prepare for the Running Room Grand Prix #2 on March 2, which will be the final competition before the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Indoor Track Championships from March 15-16 at Repsol Sport Centre in Calgary.

RDC Athlete of the Week for Oct. 15, 2018

This past Saturday, Shayla had an excellent outing at Running Room Grand Prix #5, hosted by the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings. The first-year student-athlete was an important member of the RDC Queens Cross Country Running team’s first place finish in the final tune-up before the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Cross Country Running Championships. The gifted runner had one of her best performances and completed the 6 km course in 7th spot overall (25:44) among ACAC female runners. Shayla and the other RDC runners will now prepare for the ACAC championships on Saturday, October 27. Lakeland College will host the event.
