Queens sweep Lions in straight sets to claim ACAC bronze

The Red Deer College Queens swept the Ambrose University Lions in 3 sets (25-23, 25-21 and 25-19) to win the bronze medal at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Championship at Lakeland College on Saturday evening. Since the start of the 2010-11 season the Queens have won 3 ACAC bronze medals and 2 gold.

The 4th seed Ambrose University Lions provided the shock of the tournament beating the top seeded King's University Eagles in the 1st round before losing to the Lakeland College Rustlers in the 2nd round. Lakeland College eventually won gold while the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves earned silver.

Julia Kemper led the Lions with 8 kills and Queens left-side Miranda Dawe had 16 kills for the victorious Queens. Dawe was the player-of-the-game for the bronze-medal winners.  The player-of-the-game for the 4th place Lions was libero Brooklyn Dyck.

Queens Volleyball Head Coach Chris Wandler appreciated the strong group effort.

"We responded with a team effort tonight," said Wandler. "This group has a lot of pride that has been built, not only over this season, but over the past few seasons."

The experience is very beneficial moving forward.

"This match was an important bridge to next season," said Wandler. "With only losing 4 student-athletes to graduation, this experience proves to be valuable."

The RDC Queens Volleyball season is now complete and the student-athletes and coaches can be proud of their effort and accomplishment.
