RDC Queens open championship with a 3 set victory

The Red Deer College Queens completed a 3-set sweep (28-26, 25-20, 25-20) over the NAIT Ooks in the 2nd game of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women's Volleyball Championship at Lakeland College on Thursday afternoon.

The Queens (1-0) are looking to get back to the gold-medal game for the 3rd time in 4 years while the Ooks returned to the 8-team championship for the 1st time since the 2014-15 season.

Right side, McKenna Barthel had 10 kills for the Queens (1-0) while teammate Miranda Dawe also added 10 kills.

Edmonton native, Nalani Stang led the Ooks (0-1) with 12 kills while Karly Kupka and Joslyn Peters had nine kills each.

Queens Head Coach Chris Wandler was pleased with the victory.

"We played fairly consistent in all phases of our game this afternoon. Our 1st contact of serving and passing was good all game," said Wandler. "After the 1st set, our defensive transition started to pay dividends near the end of each set which allowed us to pull away after the score was 18. All-in-all it was a good team win."

Friday, the Red Deer College Queens face the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves at 6:00 p.m. in their 2nd game of the championship.
