Volleyball Queens complete weekend sweep of Rattlers, win 14th in a row

In an afternoon rematch, the Medicine Hat College Rattlers pushed the Red Deer College Queens Volleyball team beyond 25 points in a pair of sets but the Queens showed poise and defeated the Rattlers in straight sets.

The Queens won the 1st set 25-20. Medicine Hat College made things interesting in the next 2 sets and tested RDC's resiliency. The RDC Queens showed great resolve, took the 2nd set 28-26 and capped off the match with a 29-27 victory. 

Miranda Dawe led the RDC Queens with 13 kills. For RDC, Ashley Fehr contributed 36 assists, 1 kill, 3 digs and 1 stuff block. Amber Stigter led the Rattlers with 17 kills.

Megan Schmidt was named the Queens player-of-the-game. The Bachelor of Business Administration student finished with 9 kills, 1 assist and 1 stuff block.

Queens Volleyball Head Coach Chris Wandler can take several positives from the persistent victory.

"I liked that it was tough for us today. It showed that we are a very resilient group, sticking to our process and what we do well," said Wandler. "I like the fact that we know we can win matches in a variety of ways."

The hard fought win will help the RDC Queens next weekend against the division leading Briercrest College Clippers.

"Today was about patience and maintaining our composure," said Wandler. "They will be good things to have heading into an important weekend."

With the victory, the RDC Queens (19-3) have impressively won 14 matches in a row. The Queens remain in 2nd spot and improve to 38 points in the ACAC Women's Volleyball South Division. Briercrest College is only 2 points ahead of RDC. 

Next weekend is set up for a fantastic volleyball matchup. Friday, Feb. 17 the RDC Queens host the Briercrest College Clippers (20-2) at 6:00 p.m. In a Saturday afternoon contest, the Queens and Clippers hit the court at 1:00 p.m.
