In 4 sets, Queens down Kodiaks for 12th win in a row

In the 2nd game of a weekend series, the Red Deer College Queens Volleyball team faced the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in the RDC Main Gym Saturday afternoon. After the Queens went up 2 sets, the Kodiaks tried to make things interesting and won the 3rd set. RDC persevered and took the 4th set to close out the match.

The opening set featured some lengthy rallies and both teams looked sharp in early going. After the 1st set was tied 7-7, the RDC Queens went on a 14-5 run to jump ahead 21-12. The Kodiaks couldn't rally and the Queens picked up a 25-14 win. McKenna Barthel and Miranda Dawe had 4 kills each for RDC. For the Kodiaks, Lindsay Glas had 3 kills.

The Queens picked up a win in the 2nd set (25-17). Over both sets, Miranda Dawe contributed 11 kills for the Queens. Lindsay Glas led the Kodiaks with 5. Ashley Fehr had 18 assists for RDC.

In the 3rd set, the Kodiaks elevated their game and defeated the Queens 25-19. Lauren Marshall had a total of 13 digs for RDC.

The Kodiaks tried to claw back into the match but the Queens won the 4th set 25-20 to complete the match victory. For RDC, Ashley Fehr accumulated 38 assists, 3 service aces and 5 digs.

Miranda Dawe was named the Queens player-of-the-game. The Kinesiology and Sport Studies student finished with 23 kills, 1 assist, 7 digs and 2 stuff blocks.

Queens Volleyball Head Coach Chris Wandler is using the game as an opportunity to grow.

"It was a good learning day for us. We learned that we need to continue go about executing play-to-play, winning that rally and not focusing on the scoreboard," said Wandler. "It got a little bit away from us in the 3rd set. That's been one of our strengths in this run and hopefully we can learn from that going into next week."

The Queens finished with 5 service aces, but Wandler thought the serving part of game was safe.

"Our serving was cautious. It wasn't as deliberate was we wanted it to be. We didn't miss too many," said Wandler. "We talked about possessing the ball and serving is part of that. It was okay at best."

With the victory, the RDC Queens (17-3) improve to 34 points, have won 12 matches in a row, sit in 2nd place in the ACAC Women's Volleyball South Division and only trail the 1st place Clippers by 4 points.

Next weekend, the Red Deer College Queens travel to Medicine Hat to face the Rattlers (1-18). Friday Feb. 10, the teams compete at 6:00 p.m. In a rematch, the Rattlers host the Queens at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday Feb. 11.
