Trojans over Queens on penalty kick

Brent Forster - RDC, with information obtained from Mark Brody of SAIT

It was a day when the result between the SAIT Trojans and RDC Queens could have gone either way, and unfortunately for the Queens, the Trojans picked up a 1-0 home victory on Saturday. The afternoon game featured wind and rain at SAIT's Cohos Commons Field.

Erin Gill was the starting goalkeeper for the Queens while Amy Offredi was at the other end of the pitch for the Trojans.

Knowing the importance of every game in the schedule, it was a cautious opening half in Calgary. Neither team could find the back of the net and after 45 minutes both squads entered the break with a 0-0 tie. The 2nd half featured improved play on the soccer pitch.

The Trojans opened the scoring in the 50th minute. First-year Skye Gordon scored on a penalty kick to give SAIT a 1-0 lead. "There was pressure to score on it, but teammate Deanna Kuan calmed me down," said Gordon.

Minutes after Gordon's goal, RDC was awarded their own penalty kick. Trojans keeper Amy Offredi decided to change up her usual routine, choosing to move around. "I saw how the RDC player came into the ball, and was able to figure out what she was going to do," said Offredi. "I was a little nervous. We were up 1-0 and if I missed it, we would have had to settle for a tie."

The penalty kick went to Offredi's left, and she guessed correctly. Offredi quickly scrambled to clear the ball before any Queens players could get to it.

Queens Soccer Head Coach Esad Elkaz appreciated the effort in a game that didn't unfold as hoped. "The ladies played well. It was a game that could have gone either way," said Elkaz. "In the 1st half we played a little bit tense but in the 2nd half we started to string some good things together. We couldn't finish today but tomorrow is another day."

The RDC Queens (1-2-3) will continue their road trip and face the Olds College Broncos (4-1-1) on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Currently, the Queens sit in 4th spot in the ACAC Women's Soccer South Division with 6 points while the Broncos share 2nd with Medicine Hat College (13 points).
