Olds, AB - The Red Deer College Queens had the start to the season that they were looking for. On the strength of two power play markers and a perfect penalty kill, the Queens skated to a 3-2 road decision over the Olds College Broncos.
Queens goaltender Karlee Fetch and Broncos goalkeeper Lexi Bruce were unbeatable in the opening frame.
The goals started to come in the second period. At 6:30, the Broncos took a 1-0 lead. While down a skater, Sarah Jarvis was stationed inside the right circle and beat Fetch on the short side. The Queens stayed patient and just over three minutes later they evened the score. Only seconds into a power play, Avery Lajeunnesse located Kirsten Baumgardt at the point and the Kinesiology student's shot was initially stopped by Bruce. The puck popped out to Bachelor of Science Nursing student Mary Hirsch, who tucked the rebound past the Olds goaltender.
The score remained even until nearly half-way through the third period. At 9:14, Ashley Sutherland shot from the point and Brooklyn Rowley tipped it past Bruce for a 2-1 edge. Sydney Rowley recorded an assist on her sister's first goal in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).
Then less than two minutes later, Ashley Sutherland wired one past Bruce for an important insurance goal. Mary Hirsch picked up the lone assist, her second point of the game. Sutherland's tally proved to be the game-winning-goal.
With 3:50 remaining, Abby Webster pulled the Broncos within one. After her initial shot was blocked, Webster found the puck and released a quick wrister under Fetch's glove. The Queens were tasked with killing a late penalty and the Broncos pulled Bruce for the extra attacker, but Fetch shut the door and the Queens wrapped up a 3-2 road victory.
The Red Deer College Queens peppered Bruce with 37 shots. The Olds College Broncos tested fifth-year Fetch 20 times.
The RDC Queens connected on two-of-ten power plays and killed off all seven of the Broncos' opportunities with the extra skater.
Airdrie's Ashley Sutherland was recognized as the Queens top performer. Sarah Jarvis received the honour for the Broncos.
On Friday, October 11, the Queens (1-0-0) will take on the Broncos (0-1-0) at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre at 7:00 p.m.
