Griffins down Queens despite strong performance from Fetch

Edmonton, AB – After 49 minutes of scoreless hockey, the MacEwan University Griffins potted a pair of goals in the third period for a 2 - 0 win over the Red Deer College Queens on Saturday night.

Midway through the third period, MacEwan's Chantal Ricker missed the net, but the puck caromed off the end boards right to Nikki Reimer who jammed it in on the power play past Karlee Fetch at the Downtown Community Arena.

At 11:23 on another power play, Reimer passed over to Ricker who sifted a shot under Karlee Fetch's blocker to seal the 2 - 0 result.

Fetch, a fourth-year student-athlete from Prince Albert, was solid stopping 20 shots. MacEwan's Natalie Bender made 24 saves.

Queens Hockey Head Coach Kelly Coulter appreciated the work ethic. "It was a better effort tonight," he says. "Unfortunately, our special teams couldn't get the job done but Karlee played well in net."

With the result, the Griffins (7 - 1  -0 - 0) remain in first place. The RDC Queens (2 - 4 - 0) sit in fourth but only one point behind the third place Olds College Broncos (2 - 3 - 1). 

MacEwan's power play went 2-for-8. RDC's didn't connect on six attempts with the extra skater.

Next, the Queens will play a home-and-home series against the SAIT Trojans (1 - 5 - 0). On Friday, November 9, RDC will travel to Calgary to face SAIT at 7:00 p.m. Then on Saturday at 7:00 p.m., the Queens will host the Trojans at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.
