The Hockey Queens faced-off against the SAIT Trojans Saturday evening in Calgary, and after the Queens jumped out to a lead they couldn't be caught and they earned a 3-1 road victory with a strong effort. Tracie Kikuchi was the starting goaltender for the Queens and had another great game. Elisha Oswald was in net for the Trojans.
At 15:57 of the first period, Jade Petrie scored her league leading ninth goal of the season to put the Queens on the board. Sydnee Decorby, a first-year Bachelor of Education student, assisted on the game's first goal. Kikuchi stopped all 5 shots that she faced while Oswald made 11 saves out of 12 shots in the period.
Neither team could capitalize in the middle frame. Kikuchi turned aside all 6 of the Trojans' shots while Oswald stopped 11.
Fourth-year Keinyn Nordell gave the RDC Queens a 2-0 lead at 1:28 of the third period. Karissa Cullum and Cassidy Anderson had the assists. Over 3 minutes later, SAIT pulled within a goal. McKenzie Meek scored at 4:56 but that was as close as the Trojans would get on the night. With 1:12 remaining in the game, Celine Chailler, a first-year forward from Grande Prairie, salted the game away and gave the RDC Queens a 3-1 win. Jade Petrie picked up the lone assist. Oswald was pulled with 50 seconds remaining for the extra skater, but Kikuchi shut the door for the Queens' fifth win in row. The RDC Queens outshot the SAIT Trojans 11-10 in the final period. Over 60 minutes, RDC held a 34-21 shot advantage.
Queens Hockey Head Coach Kelly Coulter liked the effort to cap off 2017. "It was a much better game tonight," said Coulter. "We created more offensive chances and we managed the puck much better."
The head coach noted several solid individual performances. "Camryn Wallan, Celine Chailler and Jade Petrie all had strong games for us tonight," said Coulter.
The Red Deer College Queens (9-3-2-0) will host the NAIT Ooks (10-2-0-0) on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the NexSource Centre in Sylvan Lake at 7:00 p.m. The NAIT Ooks and RDC Queens share top spot in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women's Hockey with 20 points. The MacEwan University Griffins (8-1-3-0) have 19 points.
