Brent Forster - RDC

Saturday evening, the Red Deer College Queens Hockey team faced the Olds College Broncos at the NexSource Centre in Sylvan Lake, and the Queens had a strong defensive game along with another solid outing from goaltender Tracie Kikuchi. The RDC Queens went up by a pair in the first period, added another one in the third, and Kikuchi turned aside every Olds College shot for the 3-0 shutout victory.

The Queens struck early in the first period. At 2:40, Keinyn Nordell beat Jaydlin Spooner to put RDC up 1-0. Neisha Germann picked up the assist. The Queens continued to apply pressure and at 13:33 Jade Petrie scored on the power play to give the Queens a two goal lead. Julia Murrell and Catherine Longchamps had the assists. Petrie's goal was her league leading eighth goal of the season. RDC outshot Olds College 16-5 in the period.

In the second period, Kikuchi turned aside 5 shots and Spooner stopped 12, and neither team could find the back of the net. 

At 1:56 into the third period, Julia Murrell struck on the power play to give the Queens a 3 goal cushion. Jade Petrie picked up the lone helper and her eleventh point of the season. Time expired and the RDC Queens earned a 3-0 victory. In the period, RDC outshot Olds College 7-5. Over 60 minutes, the Queens tested Spooner 35 times while Kikuchi was unbeatable on 15 Broncos' shots. The shutout was remarkably Kikuchi's third in a row. The Kinesiology & Sport Studies student from Edmonton sports the best save percentage (0.952) and second best goals against average (1.31) in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women's Hockey.

Special teams played a big role in the Queens win. RDC killed off all 5 of the Broncos' power plays and connected on 2-of-3 of their opportunities with the extra skater. 

Queens Hockey Head Coach Kelly Coulter liked the effort from all student-athletes. "We had a really good start and a solid effort. Everyone played well tonight," said Coulter.  "Once again, Julia Murrell had a very good game and created a lot of scoring chances."

The Queens (7-3-2-0) will compete against the SAIT Trojans (1-8-1-0) on Thursday, November 23 at the ENMAX Centrium at 7:00 p.m.
