Szymanek and Queens strike Lightning in Calgary

Calgary, AB – The RDC Queens were very good throughout their road game against the St. Mary's University Lightning, but they saved their best for last. A dominant fourth quarter (25-14), along with a diversified offence, helped the visitors defeat the St. Mary's University Lightning by sixteen points (76-60).

At the half, the RDC Queens led 37-30. The Lightning pulled within five after three quarters (45-51) but the Queens dug in for the final ten minutes. Outscoring St. Mary's University by twelve points in the fourth, the Red Deer College Queens solidified a 76-60 victory.

Four RDC Queens hit double digits. Amy Szymanek powered the Queens' offence with 22 points. The Bachelor of Education Secondary student added eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal, and hit two out of two three-pointers. Sandra Garcia-Bernal played with energy once again, contributing a double-double (15 points and 13 rebounds).

Lauren Cardinal scored 12 points. Sophie Melin had 11.

Emily Wagner led the Lightning with 26 points and was recognized as her team's top performer.

The RDC Queens were stronger in several categories. RDC had 15 more boards (45-30). The Queens were successful on 71.4 per cent of their free-throws. The Lightning responded with 62.5 per cent.

The Queens were more efficient from the field (44.8 to 32.4%) and beyond the three-point arc (35.3 to 33.3%).

On Friday, November 8, the third place Red Deer College Queens (2-1) will compete against the Olds College Broncos (1-0) at 6:00 p.m. on the road.
