Basketball Kings earn dominant road win

In Saskatchewan, the Red Deer College Kings Basketball team hit the hardwood against the Briercrest College Clippers, and the RDC squad had a very strong game. The Kings outscored the Clippers in every quarter and won by an incredible 50 point margin. 

The Kings opened the game with 28 points in the first quarter while the Clippers responded with 14. In the quarter, Dshawn Tyrell, a Cook Apprenticeship student, accumulated 10 points, 1 assist and 1 rebound for RDC. The RDC Kings added another 30 points in the second quarter and held a 24 point advantage (58-34) at the half. In the second quarter, Cody White contributed 8 points, 1 assist and 1 rebound for the Kings.

RDC picked up another 29 points in the third quarter while Briercrest College scored 20. Derian Valdes stacked up 7 points in the quarter for the RDC Kings. The Red Deer College Kings had a strong fourth quarter and outscored the Clippers 33-16 to earn an impressive 120-70 victory. Erik Bakker, a first-year forward from Calgary, finished the game with a double-double (11 points and 11 rebounds). Valdes led the Kings with 37 points, Tyrell contributed 31 points and Darryl Broderick added 14 points. Solon Ellis had 12 assists for RDC.

As a team, the RDC Kings shot very well on the night. They connected on 51.7% of their shots from the field and hit 45.9% of their three-point attempts. The Kings were strong on the boards at both ends of the court and held a 50-24 edge in rebounds.

Kings Basketball Head Coach Clayton Pottinger liked many aspects of the Kings' game on Friday night. "We actually started a bit slow tonight but our defence picked us up. We shot quite well - our ability to score in transition was good and our defensive rebounding was strong," said Pottinger. "Omon Edobar sent a nice lob to Dshawn Tyrell who finished with a two-handed dunk, and that provided energy to the team."

Looking ahead to Saturday afternoon in Medicine Hat, Pottinger wants the team to focus on the details of the game. "Against the Rattlers we want to focus on the details, our communication and working together," said Pottinger. 

The RDC Kings (2-1) will compete against the Rattlers (4-1) in Medicine Hat on Saturday, November 4 at 3:30 p.m.
