In Olds, the Red Deer College Kings Basketball team faced the Olds College Broncos in a rare Thursday night showdown. The RDC Kings started and ended the game slower than they would have liked but a strong 2nd and 3rd quarter were enough for a 78-69 road victory.

The Kings found themselves behind 21-12 after the 1st quarter. RDC had a strong 2nd quarter, outscored Olds College 27-14 and took a 39-35 lead into the halftime break. The Kings' momentum carried over into the 3rd quarter and they had a 23-12 scoring advantage. In the 4th quarter, Olds College put together their strongest quarter and scored 22 points while RDC responded with 16. The Red Deer College Kings picked up a 78-69 win.

Ian Tevis led the Kings with 14 points. The guard from Kent, Washington added 1 block, 5 steals, 8 assists and 16 rebounds. Anthony Heintzman led the Broncos with 23 points.

Kings Basketball Head Coach Clayton Pottinger would like to see a consistent performance in the rematch on Saturday.

"We started slow, picked our game up in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and ended slow," said Pottinger. "We really only played well for 2 quarters tonight and Saturday we would like to see a full 4 quarters of playoff style basketball."

Several Kings hit double digits. Spencer Klassen and Shayne Stumpf each contributed 12 points. Matt Matear finished with 11 points and Darryl Broderick accumulated 10 points.

"Our scoring was balanced tonight but we didn't really shoot as well as we can," said Pottinger.

As a team, the Kings shot 41.8% from the field and 21.4% from behind the 3 point arc. RDC outrebounded Olds College 53-39.

With the victory, the RDC Kings improve to 24 points in the ACAC Men's Basketball South Division. The RDC Kings, Lethbridge College Kodiaks, SAIT Trojans and Medicine Hat College Rattlers share top spot in the division.

In the 2nd half of the home-and-home series, the RDC Kings host the Olds College Broncos Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
