The opening day of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Golf Championships wrapped up at the RedTail Landing Golf Club on Saturday, and the Red Deer College Golf teams are in the hunt for medals. The Kings sit in top spot as a team while the Queens are in 3rd with 1 more day of competition to go.

Individually, RDC's Logan Hill impressively shot a round of 71 and sits in top spot among ACAC men. The Business Administration (General Management) student picked up 14 pars and 3 birdies on Saturday. Teammate Clayton Dunn shares 2nd place with Josh Gorieu (MacEwan University) and both student-athletes opened the championship with a 75. Ryan Skoreyko rounded out the top 3 Kings' golfers on the day and shot an 80 (tied for 11th). Cole Morrison did not attend the opening day due to a family committment. Morrison is expected to golf on Sunday.

Shaye Leidenius continues to swing the club well and finished her round in a tie for top spot among ACAC women with Daniela Donnelly (84 strokes). Leidenius, a Kinesiology & Sport Studies student, accumulated 8 pars and 1 birdie. Queens' teammates Bradie Ouellette-Pillman and Paige Tichkowsky share 11th spot with 103.

RDC Golf Head Coach Scott Bergdahl was happy with the opening day in Nisku. "I'm generally pleased with our 1st day. A team can't win the championship on the opening day but they can lose it," said Bergdahl. "Both our men's and women's teams are in the hunt. If they play their game then we will be in good shape."

Day 2 will continue on Sunday for an opportunity to earn ACAC medals and a berth in nationals.
