RDC Curling teams head to national playoffs on Saturday

The RDC Men's Curling team came into Friday as the top male squad (4-1) and wanted to maintain that positive momentum on an important 3rd day at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Curling National Championships at the Rose City Curling Club.

The Red Deer College women's team needed a strong outing to grab a playoff spot in Camrose on Saturday. Entering today, RDC, Niagara and Lakeland had the same record (2-3) and Concordia (3-2) was within striking distance in the women's division. Fanshawe held a 5-0 record and NAIT sat in 2nd spot at 4-1. With several options for playoff matchups, it came down to who would execute on the ice.

Both teams got off to a strong start. At 9:00 a.m., the Kings continued to roll and won 6-4 over the Ooks. On sheet 5, the RDC Queens picked up a crucial win and defeated the host U of A Augustana Vikings 9-5.

At 2:00 p.m., the RDC men picked up their 6th win as they defeated Mohawk 6-4 to seal top spot heading into Saturday's playoffs. The Red Deer College Women exploded for 10 points and won 10-4 over the Lakeland Rustlers to earn a playoff berth.

The top seeded RDC Kings will face the 4th place Mohawk Mountaineers in semi-final action at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The 2nd place Fanshawe Falcons will compete against the 3rd ranked Humber Hawks in the other men's semi-final matchup. The 4th place Red Deer College Queens will hit the ice against the 1st place Fanshawe Falcons in 1 of the women's semi-finals. The 2nd place Concordia Thunder will play the 3rd ranked women's team, the NAIT Ooks, in the other semi-final draw.
