Kings show heart in bronze semi against Cavaliers

Brent Forster - RDC

Oshawa, Ontario - The Red Deer College Kings continue to show a lot of heart and determination. The RDC team dealt with more injuries in the bronze semi-final against Champlain College St-Lambert Cavaliers on Friday, and dropped a 3-0 decision, but it wasn't for a lack of trying.

Lacombe's Cale Jacobs played an energetic game and forced Champlain College's goalkeeper to make a jumping save in the early stages.

The opening half was deadlocked until the 29th minute. As a member of the Kings was dealing with a bloody nose, the Cavaliers capitalized. Off a cross, Kings goalkeeper Jacob Hamilton made a nice initial save, but fourth-year Sport Marketing & Management student Jared Leheta pounced on the rebound.

Before the end of the half, Hamilton would leave the game with an injury. Rhys Groenewegen took over in net and Hamilton did not return.

Early in the second half, the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) gold medal winning Champlain College Cavaliers struck twice to take a 3-0 edge. Cavaliers midfielders Zakaria Bahous and Jeremy Tremblay had well-placed shots in the far right corner.

Cale Jacobs continued to press in the late stages but the Cavaliers defenders built a wall in front of their goalkeeper and Champlain College wrapped up a 3-0 decision, advancing to the bronze medal game on Saturday against the Douglas Royals at 2:00 p.m EST.

Fourth-year Cale Jacobs was named the 4imprint Kings Player-of-the-Game. Jared Leheta received the honour for the Cavaliers.
