Curling Queens earn win at championships, Hamilton honoured as top coach

Olds, AB - The first day of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Curling Championships was finalized and the Red Deer College Queens earned a win to begin the weekend, while the Kings and mixed team will look to get into the win column on Saturday. 

At 12:00 p.m., the Concordia University Thunder downed the RDC Kings 7-4. The NAIT Ooks Men's team continued to roll in ACAC competition and remained undefeated on the season. They won 8-4 over the Lakeland College Rustlers and then picked up a 9-2 victory over the Kings.

The Red Deer College Queens started the day extremely well, defeating the NAIT Ooks 7-4. Then at 4:00 p.m., the Queens dropped an 8-3 decision to the MacEwan University Griffins. 

The RDC Mixed team lost 7-2 to the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings and then came up short (6-4) against the NAIT Ooks. 

All three RDC teams will be in action at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Kings will face the Lakeland College Rustlers on sheet three. The Red Deer College Queens will compete against the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings and the RDC Mixed Curling team will play the Rustlers. Olds College is hosting the event.

Brad Hamilton recognized as the ACAC Coach of the Year

At the ACAC Curling Championships Banquet and Awards Presentation, Red Deer College Curling Head Coach Brad Hamilton was honoured as the ACAC Curling Coach of the Year in Olds on Friday evening. Hamilton impressively helped lead all three RDC teams to the championships. The Kings, Queens and mixed team earned top four placements after the results were combined from the Fall and Winter Regionals.

Hamilton previously won the ACAC Coach of the Year in 2016 and was also named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Curling Coach of the Year in 2017, after the Queens won national gold.
